The Hospital Visit
Hospitals have their own hegemony
They are filled with:
Patients
Visitors
The unseen staff; managers, administration
The visible staff; receptionist, cleaners, porters, canteen staff, etc.
Nurses
Doctors
The hegemony of the hospital is medicine, illness, doctors, nurses and authority.
Through this hegemony: the patients, employees and visitors; attitudes and actions are influenced upon their individual attitude and position within this authority.
There are good and bad; patients, staff and visitors, who are measured by all within the hegemony, and this is done through the self-policing of the hospital hegemony, and all hegemonies are created and exist though continuity and change.
Once the continuity of hegemony has been created it polices itself and changes through consequences, without consequences there is no order, the hegemony collapses.
The unseen staff concern themselves with the operation of the hospital. They are employees of the hospital and their job is to see that their place of employment not only runs like a hospital but also is seen to run like a hospital. Their expectation comes through their cultural perception of the hospital hegemony, their job description and their employer’s perception of the hospital hegemony.
Thus not all hospitals are the same, they all fit within one major cultural perception of hospitals, but they also change within areas, towns and even individual hospitals, and Private or National Health.
